About Build Calculators
Build Calculators was built because I kept needing it and it did not quite exist in the way I wanted. Not a supplier's calculator that steered me toward their products. Not buried in forums with conflicting answers. Just a clean, honest set of material estimators you can trust for real UK projects.
I am an experienced DIYer - the kind who has laid patios, poured concrete bases, built stud walls, set fence posts in Postcrete and taken on projects that most people would call a tradesperson for. The projects that prompted this site were the usual kind: a concrete base for a new shed, a patio that needed a proper sub-base, fence posts, floor screed, plasterboard. All requiring the same arithmetic: how much material, in what format, with how much spare?
Whether you are a first-time homeowner trying to plan a patio, a regular DIYer who does most of your own work, or a tradesperson wanting a quick quantity check without getting the calculator out - these tools are built for you. The numbers are practical, the assumptions are shown, and the results give you a sensible starting point for ordering.
Starting with the calculators I needed most and expanding from there. Now 14 calculators covering concrete, aggregates, flooring, walling, fencing, paving and waste.

What these calculators do
Each calculator gives you a planning estimate based on your dimensions, the selected material type, and a reasonable wastage allowance. The results are designed to help you:
- Work out roughly how much material to order before getting supplier quotes
- Understand how depth and area translate into tonnes, bags or m³
- Account for compaction (particularly relevant for MOT Type 1 and sub-base aggregates)
- Allow an appropriate wastage margin so you do not run short
- Compare bag quantities vs bulk bags vs loose delivery
Assumptions and accuracy
All material densities, bag yields and compaction factors are estimates based on typical UK planning figures. They are not supplier-guaranteed values and will vary by product, supplier and site conditions.
Every calculator page shows its assumptions - you can see exactly what figures are being used and why. If your supplier gives you a different figure (say, their bulk bags hold 900kg rather than 850kg), you can usually adjust the wastage allowance to compensate, or use the override options where available.
These calculators are genuinely useful for planning. They are not a substitute for professional advice on structural, load-bearing or regulated work. If in doubt, always ask a qualified professional.
