Panels vs posts — quick reference
| Panels | Posts needed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 6 | Short garden section |
| 10 | 11 | Typical garden boundary |
| 15 | 16 | Longer boundary run |
| 20 | 21 | Large garden or field |
Posts = panels + 1 for a straight run. Gate openings need 2 additional gate posts.
How to measure for fence panels
Measure the total fence run from the outer edge of one end post to the outer edge of the other. Deduct any gate openings. Divide the remaining length by your panel width (1.83m for standard 6ft panels) and round up to the nearest whole number. You will always need one more post than the number of panels.
Allow 1–2 spare panels for cuts, damage and future replacements. Gravel boards add at least 6 inches of height protection at the base of each panel and are recommended for timber fencing in contact with soil.
