Tips for choosing the right skip size

The most common mistake is underestimating skip size. Waste takes up more space than you think once it is broken up and piled in. A bathroom that looks modest generates a lot of rubble, old tiles, sanitary ware and broken plaster. A skip that is too small means an extra collection or overfilling - both create problems.

When in doubt, go one size up. The cost difference between a midi and a builders skip is typically £50-80. An extra collection costs more. If you have space to site a larger skip, the bigger one almost always makes sense.

Consider a wait-and-load option. For quick clearance jobs, some companies offer a skip lorry that stays while you load - useful for small but dense jobs.

Check for plasterboard restrictions. Following changes in waste regulation, many skip hire companies now restrict or ban plasterboard in mixed waste skips. Plasterboard must often go in a dedicated skip or bag. Confirm before you strip out.
