How Much Does a Skip Cost in the UK?

Skip prices vary more than most people expect - by size, location, hire period, waste type and supplier. Here are the real numbers and what moves the price.

The first time I hired a skip I phoned one company, got a price, booked it, and paid. I later mentioned the price to a neighbour who had just had a skip on his drive for an extension project - same size skip, three streets away, same week - and he had paid £70 less from a different company.

Skip hire is a local, competitive market. Prices genuinely vary, the margin for negotiation is real, and the range between the cheapest and most expensive supplier in any given town can be 30-40%.

Here are the actual numbers and how to get value.

Skip hire price guide by size (2025)

These are typical UK prices including delivery, collection and disposal. London and South East commands a premium of 20-40% in most cases.

Midi (4-5 yd3)~3.4 m3£150-260£220-350
Builders (6-8 yd3)~5.4 m3£200-350£300-450

Prices include standard 7-14 day hire. Most companies charge daily rates after the initial period.

What affects the price

Location. Disposal costs vary with the distance to the nearest licensed waste facility and local tip gate fees. Rural areas sometimes pay less than city centres despite the longer drive.

Waste type. A standard mixed-waste skip for general renovation debris is the basic price. Skips containing exclusively soil (inert waste) often attract lower disposal fees because inert waste goes to different facilities. Skips with plasterboard, tyres or hazardous materials may cost more or be refused.

Season. Spring and summer are peak season for skip hire - garden projects, renovations, house clearances. Prices can be 15-20% higher in busy periods. Winter bookings sometimes attract discounts.

Hire period. Standard hire is typically 7-14 days. Each additional week adds £20-50 depending on the company. If you know you need the skip for three weeks, ask for a quote including that upfront - some companies offer a better rate for longer bookings than the daily rate implies.

Road permits. If the skip sits on a public road or pavement, you need a permit from the local council. The skip company usually arranges this and adds the cost - typically £20-60 depending on the council. Skips on private driveways do not need a permit.

How to get the best skip price

Get three quotes. In most towns, three minutes on the phone to three local skip hire companies will give you three different prices. The cheapest reputable supplier is rarely much harder to deal with than the most expensive.

Ask about wait-and-load. For small, quick jobs, some skip hire companies offer a vehicle that stays while you load - this avoids the permit cost, the hire period charge and the delivery/collection cost for a swap. Not everyone offers it but it is worth asking.

Be honest about what is going in. Vague descriptions of waste content can lead to disputes when the skip comes back heavier than expected or contains prohibited materials. Know your waste type before you call.

Combine with a neighbour. If the street has two or three renovations happening close together, a single large skip shared between properties is often cheaper per project than separate smaller hires.

Book the right size. Over-estimating and hiring a builders skip when a midi would do wastes money. Under-estimating and needing a second collection can cost as much as the first skip. Use the Skip Size Calculator to get a realistic estimate first.

My tips on skip hire value

The cost-per-m3 gets better as you go bigger. A mini skip at £150 for 1.5 m3 is £100 per m3. A builders skip at £280 for 5.4 m3 is £52 per m3. If you have the space and the volume, going bigger is almost always better value.

Negotiate end-of-day delivery. Some companies discount late afternoon delivery slots that would otherwise go empty. If you are flexible on when the skip arrives, it is worth asking.

Avoid the final Friday of the month. This is when most renovations hit their skip-emptying moment and the companies are busiest. Mid-week, mid-month is the easiest time to book at short notice.
